Photoshop’s Generative AI turned this photo into a work of art I’m impressed!
Adobe Firefly Integrations in Illustrator and Photoshop
As a Lightroom user who finds Adobe Bridge a clunky and awkward way of reviewing images from a shoot, this closer integration with Lightroom is to be welcomed. Meanwhile more AI tools, powered by Firefly, the umbrella term for Adobe’s arsenal of AI technologies, are now generally available in Photoshop. These include Generative Fill, Generative Expand, Generate Similar and Generate Background powered by Firefly’s Image 3 Model. I think this is a fantastic new tool from Adobe that could save photographs that otherwise would’ve been discarded due to a distracting reflection. I can see the Reflection Removal tool being used in many instances, such as a photograph from the window of a house or airplane, where the reflection is so strong it detracts from the image’s primary focus. Adobe then runs the simulated photograph through its AI model and asks it to pull out the original without reflections.
You can also get the Adobe Elements Bundle consisting of both Photoshop and Premiere Elements—for video editing and image editing—for a total of $149.99 or discounted to $119.99 to upgrade an existing license. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 30 years, you likely already know what Photoshop is—Adobe’s flagship image editing software. While it began as a disk you’d purchase (and own) to install on your computer, it now exists as part of the Adobe Creative Cloud plan. Adobe offers a range of tools, Photoshop and Photoshop Elements being two options with very similar features. If you don’t know much about Photoshop Elements, this article will provide valuable insights to help you determine which of the two suits you best.
For example, the company stipulates that the Credit consumption rates above are for what it calls “standard images” that have a resolution of up to 2,000 by 2,000 pixels — the original maximum resolution of Firefly generative AI. Along that same line of thinking, Adobe says that it hasn’t provided any notice about these changes to most users since it’s not enforcing its limits for most plans yet. Adobe does not seem to have any plans to put warnings or notifications in its apps to alert users when they are running low on Credits either, even when the company does eventually enforce these limits. As part of the original story below, PetaPixel also added a line stating that in-app notifications are being used in Adobe Express to let users know about Generative Credits use. The company, which produces software such as Photoshop and Illustrator, unveiled over 100 new capabilities for its Creative Cloud platform, many of which leverage artificial intelligence to enhance content creation and editing processes.
AI features on the Samsung Galaxy S25 that make me forgive the minor hardware changes
Promising Unreal Engine 5 world building toolset gets new options for creating terrain and layering effects. With it, users can composite a new foreground object into a background image in Photoshop, importing it as a separate layer, and removing the background. The layout is then used as a compositional guide for the final 2D image, with the AI model matching its camera position, and the placement of objects within the scene. The first products from Canon, Nikon, and Leica to adopt the Frame.io Camera to Cloud Standard are the Leica SL3, Nikon Z6 III, Z8, and Z9 (through the NX MobileAir app for iOS and Android) and the Canon C400 and C80 cine cameras.
- These include Generative Fill, Generative Expand, Generate Similar and Generate Background powered by Firefly’s Image 3 Model.
- Generative Fill, when used in this manner to expand an image, works best by selecting portions to expand bit by bit rather than all the expanded areas at once.
- This capability lets you type a prompt to create a new pattern in Illustrator.
However, Adobe Firefly has a web-based version that is free to try out. Using Adobe Firefly on the web doesn’t have the same capabilities as Photoshop, but it can give potential new users an introduction to Adobe’s generative AI. Adobe Firefly’s online tool also serves as a preview of beta features that could be coming to future versions of Photoshop. It includes text-to-image and generative fill, video templates, stock music, image and design assets, and quick-action editing tools to help you create content easily on the go.
Step 3: Choose Your Dimensions & Create a New Project

He holds a bachelor’s degree in communication from Worcester State University and a master’s degree in digital media studies from the University of Denver. I want to make one additional note before concluding this series and that has to do with the ethics of generative AI. This concern goes beyond Adobe Firefly specifically – as it could be argued that Firefly is the least problematic and most ethical implementation of generative AI that is available today.
Generative Workspace is one of the top AI features announced at Adobe Max 2024, and will be the new home of your AI-generated imagery and files. Largely, I choose to use Generative Fill to erase objects as if they never existed and fill in the gap with a matching pattern or background. I find text-to-image prompts are less precise when looking to replace an object with something realistic. But there is also a Reference Image tool which can help enhance its accuracy, if you are so inclined. The Object Selection tool makes these precise selections in seconds and rarely makes a mistake with it. If the selection precision is off, then using the manual selection tools, you can fix it easily — but you’ve already saved time and energy on the bulk of the selection, allowing your patience level to be much higher to be able to fix it.
Step 5: Open a Photo or Generate with AI
Last week, I struggled to get any of Adobe’s generative or content-aware tools to extend a background and cover an area for a thumbnail I was working on for our YouTube channel. Previous to the updates last year, the tasks I asked Photoshop to handle were done quickly and without issue. It’s based on Generative Fill, but rather than replacing a user-selected portion of an image with AI-generated content, it automatically detects and replaces the background of the image.
While learning the basics shouldn’t theoretically be any more difficult than learning Photoshop, there is a very steep learning curve as you get into complex workflows, and you can’t always just search YouTube for help. On the other hand, everything is processed locally, it’s largely not censored, and you don’t have to deal with Adobe’s frequent false positive guideline violation warnings. Photoshop and Illustrator are getting many updates, thanks in part to Adobe’s newest AI model, Firefly Image 3. Previously available only in beta, it now powers new features and updates across Creative Cloud programs. Those who use Adobe’s Firefly app or integrations will automatically havecontent credentials attached to their work — a kind of digital nutrition label that identifies a creator’s work and any AI use. Adobe announced a new, free app called Content Authenticity that’s dedicated to creating and managing these labels earlier this month.
New shape filling and pattern generating tools are available in Illustrator, powered by Adobe’s latest Firefly Vector AI model.
Many of the updates Adobe announced are aimed at Creative Cloud users, but this one is for everyone. You can now design your own custom Gatorade Squeeze water bottle using Firefly’s text-to-image capabilities on Gatorade’s website. With Gatorade’s free membership program, you can enter what you want to appear on your water bottle, and Gatorade’s site will use Firefly to try to bring your vision to life. The update with the latest Firefly Vector model is now available in public beta, and as Adobe continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible with AI in design, we can expect even more innovative features and updates.
It works with many file types, making it ideal for sharing content across different platforms. Generative Fill is another new feature that helps artists create new content quickly. It lets them mix AI-generated elements into their work while keeping their unique style consistent. There are also options for custom brushes, textures, and blending modes for various creative choices. Not only does Generative Workspace store and present your generated images, but also the text prompts and other aspects you applied to generate them. This is helpful for recreating a past style or result, as you don’t have to save your prompts anywhere to keep a record of them.
- Equip your solo operation with these transformative services and watch your projects hit new peaks.
- The final straw for me was when AI-generated images of the war in Gaza were found being sold on Adobe Stock.
- So, of course, it becomes the gatekeeper to a new AI feature…because…I’m sure there were meetings.
- But keeping this in mind, don’t let perfect be the enemy of good; the tool is super helpful regardless.
- Adobe itself has advocated for the use of Generative Fill to remove objects from images in Photoshop, for example.
We’ve sorted through the 100+ innovations in Creative Cloud and highlighted the biggest changes coming for Adobe users. I spoke with Mengwei Ren, an applied research scientist at Adobe, about the progress Adobe is making in compositing technology. Mengwei provided me with a private preview of this technology, an excerpt of which can be viewed in the video accompanying this article. Mengwei is part of the team directly responsible for these improvements announced today as part of an Adobe Sneaks presentation.
Firefly in Adobe Illustrator
Photographers can use a reference image when using Generative Fill, and they can also use a reference image for Generate Image and Generative Expand. In a similar spirit, the new Generate Similar feature enables creators to iterate AI-created content using selected variants. Adobe further mentions that Firefly was trained on licensed content, such as Adobe Stock, and public domain content. Consequently, Firefly is designed to generate content for commercial use that does not infringe on copyright and other IP rights. Adobe offers customers IP indemnification for Firefly-generated content. Firefly Image 3 Foundation Model promises massive advancements in quality and control.
I’ve been using generative AI for a few years now and can appreciate and understand the concerns expressed above – but also recognize that this technology is not going away. We must do what we can to address the ethical concerns brought up here and make sure to use our awareness of these problematic issues to further guide the direction of these technologies as we rapidly advance forward. Using the variations in your prompt will produce dozens of images, fast. You can change almost anything in the image, from individual elements to art styles or textures. Adobe announces new tools and features often, and sometimes rolls them out in unexpected ways.
This platform, which Adobe acquired in 2021, now supports collaboration across audio, photo, and design projects, in addition to its existing video post-production capabilities. Photoshop users can also generate images with an uploaded reference image, and additional controls exist in the form of content type (photo or art) and style effects (movements, themes, techniques, effects, material, and concepts). It is now integrated with Premiere Pro, Adobe’s high-end video editing software, so give it a try. Photoshop was the first Creative Cloud app to integrate generative AI features based on Adobe Firefly, and you can use these features to really step up your Photoshop game.
Adobe Photoshop is not free; it requires a monthly subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud. However, Adobe offers a 7-day free trial to experience the full version before you upgrade to a subscription. However, I won’t sugarcoat it—the learning curve is steep, and it took me a while to feel comfortable navigating all the tools and panels. The first Adobe Photoshop alternative I’d recommend is Skylum’s Luminar Neo. I love Skylum’s Luminar Neo for its intuitive interface and how it simplifies advanced editing with its AI-driven tools. Click on the blemish in the photo, and Photoshop will automatically blend it away!
This includes respecting creators’ rights and never training the development of AI by using customer content. Adobe Firefly is the technology powering the new generative AI innovations in both Photoshop and Illustrator. And with great power comes responsibility so Adobe says it wants to be a trusted partner for creators in a way that is respectful and supportive of the creative community. Designers can also test product packaging with multiple patterns and design options, exploring ads with different seasonal variations and producing a range of designs across product mockups in endless combinations. Further, PetaPixel argues that Adobe did not provide users with a satisfactory level of notification that these changes were taking place.
You probably know that Adobe has virtually no documentation that is actually helpful if you’ve tried to look up how to prompt well in Photoshop. Much of the information on how to prompt for Adobe Firefly doesn’t apply to Photoshop. This is especially frustrating because Adobe’s guideline violation warnings don’t tell you why you got a warning.

The software also boasts Enhanced Image Trace, which Adobe says improves the conversion of images to vectors. Adobe has also improved its existing Firefly Image 3 Model, claiming it can now generate images four times faster than previous versions. The company’s Vector Model, used in Adobe Illustrator, has been enhanced to provide designers with more creative control. Adobe Photoshop is not free software, so outside of the free 7-day trial, you can’t access the generative fill tool for free.
Presumably more cameras will also get Frame.io integration via firmware updates, but no further details are available at this stage. Adobe is using this year’s Max conference to raise the profile of this collaboration platform via the new version 4, and the big news is that it is now fully integrated with Lightroom (in other words it is out of beta stage). Photographers can now automatically transfer all images uploaded via Frame.io’s Camera to Cloud into their Lightroom account. Note that the generated background even includes appropriate shadows for the main subject. I suspect this may be for similar reasons, that Stable Diffusion XL (SDXL) works best in 1024 pixel aspect ratios.

Adding some new background space above people’s heads so I could crop the photo into a heart shape and use it for crafting at home. Adding more sky to create balance in my photography when I’ve not composed it quite right. The Generative Expand tool has allowed me to improve my photos for various uses. This tool is one way to resize your images in Photoshop, but it also offers so much more. You can re-compose your images by adding more sky, more ground, or more background in general.
Typically, you’d have to save your vector design, then open it in another program like Photoshop, and play around with layers, blending, and displacement maps for realistic results. The Illustrator AI Mockup tool does it all for you, and you just have to drag your design into the shot. Previous to the introduction of Intertwine, you’d have to use multiple layers, finickety erase tools, and deal with the horror of there being no way to backtrack if you make a mistake.
I replicated my smartphone photos with AI, and Adobe Firefly 3 gave me the best results. Not only does it provide cloud-based storage with Creative Cloud subscriptions, but Adobe programs like Bridge and Frame.io allow for helpful and organized file management.
